History
Undōkōen Station was opened on 18 March 1984 as a temporary stop between Kibana and Sosanji on the Japanese National Railways Nichinan Line. It was built to relieve road congestion on National Route 220 during the Miyazaki Flower Show (now Miyazaki Flower Festa), then held at the Miyazaki Prefectural Sports Park, which gives the station its name. It was unstaffed from the outset. At the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 the station was upgraded to permanent status and passed to JR Kyushu. SUGOCA IC-card service is scheduled to begin on 17 January 2026, and the rapid service "Nichinan Marine" will start bypassing the station from 14 March 2026.
Notes
The station is located in front of the south entrance to Miyazaki Prefectural General Sports Park, but for facilities in the park's northern section, such as Sun Marine Stadium Miyazaki, the neighboring Kibana Station is actually closer by distance.
