History

Unazuki Station, a short walk from the Toyama Chihō Railway's Unazuki Onsen Station in the city of Kurobe, Toyama, is the starting point of the Kurobe Gorge Railway Main Line. The route opened on 25 June 1925 as a construction tramway laid by Nippon Denryoku (Nippon Electric Power), and on 23 October 1926 the section from this station to Nekomata began working as that company's dedicated industrial railway. Kansai Electric Power Company started passenger operations under the Local Railway Act on 16 November 1953, the date the station itself opened. The Kurobe Gorge Railway was founded on 4 May 1971 and took over running the line on 1 July of that year. Construction of the present station building started beside the old one in the spring of 1991, and the enlarged station — a large steel-framed structure of two storeys above ground and one below, with a big triangular roof and shops inside — was completed in April 1992.
