Location
History
Umegadani Station is on the JR Central Kisei Main Line in Ōuchiyama, Taiki, Watarai District, Mie Prefecture, 89.5 km from the line's origin at Kameyama. Ahead of the 1 March 1965 launch of the limited express "Kuroshio" between Tennōji and Nagoya, the Tennōji Railway Bureau decided to build a passing facility on what was then the longest unbroken segment of the Kisei Main Line — the 11.5 km gap between Ōuchiyama and Kii-Nagashima. The site opened as Umegadani Signal Station on 27 February 1965, was promoted to a passenger station on 1 November 1965 in response to long-standing petitions from Ōuchiyama village, was destaffed on 21 December 1983, and passed to JR Central on 1 April 1987 with the JNR privatisation.
Notes
Umegadani serves as the trailhead for the Nisaka and Tsuzurato Pass routes of the Kumano Kodō Iseji. The Kisei Main Line crosses Nisaka Pass between Umegadani and Kii-Nagashima, and that pass historically marked the boundary between Ise and Kii provinces; selected southbound "Nanki" limited expresses make a temporary stop at the station.
