History

Ujiie Station opened on 25 February 1897 when Nippon Railway rerouted its Utsunomiya–Yaita section through the site. The Kitsuregawa human-powered tramway (jinsha tetsudō) connected briefly between 1902 and 1918. The line was nationalised on 1 November 1906, became part of the Tōhoku Main Line in 1909, and the station building was rebuilt in March 1938. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR East. Suica accepted from 16 October 2004; the Midori no Madoguchi staffed-ticket office closed on 19 February 2016, and in 2025 the automatic ticket gates were removed and replaced with simple Suica card readers.
