History
Uji Station opened 1 June 1913 as the terminus of the Keihan Uji Line. It is in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture. A same-named JR West station stands nearby across the Uji River; this one is often called Keihan Uji Station, unofficially. On the Keihan network, a municipality's central station is conventionally named with a "-shi" suffix; Uji Station was the sole exception until a 2019 rename, and remains the only one named for the municipality alone. Rebuilt in 1995 north of the JR Nara Line for road widening, its circular building, by architect Hiroyuki Wakabayashi, won the 1996 Good Design Award. It remains a single dead-end platform with two tracks, reached from central Kyoto and Osaka by changing trains at Chūshojima.
Notes
The station is one of the real-world settings of the anime Hibike! Euphonium, and Keihan Electric Railway has used illustrations of the platform or its surroundings for promotional collaborations tied to the series.
