History

Ugo-Honjō Station opened on 30 June 1922 on the Uetsu Main Line, in what is now the city of Yurihonjō in Akita Prefecture. The Yashima Line, branching from the station, was privatised on 1 October 1985, becoming the Chōkai Sanroku Line of the third-sector Yuri Kōgen Railway. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, JR East assumed operation of the station, which also serves as a freight terminal for JR Freight. The four-track layout with two island platforms supports interchange between the JR Uetsu Main Line and Yuri Kōgen's 23-kilometre Chōkai Sanroku Line, whose opposing terminus lies at Yashima Station.
