History
Ueki opened on 1 July 1891 as an intermediate stop on the privately built Kyushu Railway, the day the line was extended south to Kumamoto. The Kyushu Railway was nationalised in July 1907, and the section through Ueki was redesignated as the Hitoyoshi Main Line on 12 October 1909 and the Kagoshima Main Line that November. The Kahon Railway (later the Yamaga Onsen Railway) opened its line from Ueki to Higo-Toyoda in December 1917, and its diesel railcars ran through from Ueki to Kumamoto Station; the Ueki–Uekimachi section was suspended after flood damage on 26 July 1957, and the railway closed entirely on 4 February 1965. Goods and parcels handling ended in 1976 and 1984, full staffing was withdrawn in 1986, and JR Kyushu took over at privatisation on 1 April 1987. The station became unstaffed again in 2015.
Notes
On 12 November 1931, the Emperor Shōwa's imperial train ran a return service between Kumamoto Station and Ueki Station during a special army manoeuvre held in Kumamoto Prefecture.
