History

Tsutsuishi Station opened as a general station in what was then Isobe Village on 16 December 1912, with the extension of the Japanese Government Railways Shin'etsu Line branch between Nadachi and Itoigawa. It was reassigned to the Hokuriku Main Line the following April, in 1913. Because this section had been plagued by landslides since it opened, a survey of a double-tracked route began in 1963 and construction of a new line was decided upon. On 29 September 1969, with the double-tracking and electrification of the Hokuriku Main Line, an inclined shaft of the Kubiki Tunnel was repurposed and the station was relocated inside the tunnel. It passed to JR West at the division and privatization of JNR in April 1987, and was transferred to Echigo Tokimeki Railway with the March 2015 extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa. It has been unstaffed since 16 March 2019.

Notes

The platform sits inside the Kubiki Tunnel at an elevation of about 20 meters above sea level; the stairway from the ticket gate runs 290 steps and 176 meters to the down-line platform and 280 steps and 212 meters to the up-line platform. As protection against the wind pressure of passing trains, the platform and the passage are separated by sturdy sliding doors.
