History
Tsukayama Station opened on 27 December 1898 as a station of the Hokuetsu Railway. It was incorporated into the state railway under the Railway Nationalization Act of 1907, a footbridge over the tracks was completed in 1966, and freight handling and parcel handling ended in 1971 and 1984 respectively. It became a JR East station with the National Railways' privatization and division of 1987. The Niigata Prefecture Chūetsu earthquake of 23 October 2004 damaged the station building, and combined with its age, a full rebuild was decided. The new station building came into service on 6 December 2005 and was formally completed the following February. Contracted service was ended on 1 June 2015, leaving the station unstaffed, and its automatic ticket machine was also changed from a touch-panel type to a button type. It currently has two side platforms serving two tracks on the Shin'etsu Main Line.
