Location

History

Tsugawa Station opened on 1 June 1913 as the eastern end of the Railway Agency's Shin'etsu Line branch from Mashita, in what was then the merchant town of Tsugawa on the Agano River. The line through to Nozawa was completed on 1 November 1914 after very difficult construction on the unstable ground between Kanose and Tsugawa, and the station was absorbed into the Gan'etsu Line, which was renamed the Ban'etsu West Line on 10 October 1917. Freight ended on 8 April 1977 and parcel service on 14 March 1985. Control passed to JR East at JNR's 1 April 1987 privatisation, and a Midori no Madoguchi opened in October 1991. A new town-house-style station building was completed on 19 September 2009. The Midori no Madoguchi closed on 30 September 2021, and the station became fully unstaffed on 1 October 2021.

Notes

The platform waiting room was remodelled in November 2013 as "Okojirō's House," after Okojirō, the mascot character of the SL Ban'etsu Monogatari steam train, which pauses here for about 15 minutes while its locomotive takes on water.
