History
Tsuchizawa Station opened on 25 October 1913 as the terminus of the first section built by the Iwate Light Railway, which aimed to connect Hanamaki and Kamaishi, as a station on a 762 mm special narrow-gauge light railway. It became an intermediate station when the line was extended to Hareyama Station on 16 April of the following year, 1914, and was nationalized on 1 August 1936, becoming a station on the Japanese National Railways Kamaishi Line. Conversion to 1,067 mm gauge was completed on 20 September 1943. It passed to JR East at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987, had its operation contracted out on 1 April 2013, and became unstaffed all day on 1 October 2018. It is a ground-level station with two facing platforms serving two tracks, capable of handling train crossings, located at Tsuchizawa, Towa-chō, Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture.
Notes
The station is said to have been the model for the starting station in Kenji Miyazawa's children's story "Night on the Galactic Railroad," and has been given the Esperanto nickname "Brila Rivero" (meaning "shining river").
