History
Tsuchitaru Station was established as Tsuchitaru Signal Station when the Ministry of Railways Jōetsu Line opened between Minakami and Echigo-Yuzawa on 1 September 1931. To serve skiers, it began winter-only passenger service on 8 December 1933, and during the war, on 10 January 1941, it was upgraded to a passenger station. Freight handling began on 15 December 1945, just after the war ended, making it a general station, but freight handling ceased in 1961 and parcel handling in 1984. It became unstaffed on 14 March 1985 and passed to JR East at the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. Platform reconstruction in June 2008 eliminated the secondary through tracks, changing the layout from two platforms and four tracks to the present two platforms and two tracks.
Notes
The Kan-Etsu Expressway runs alongside the upbound platform and the Tsuchitaru Parking Area sits immediately to the east, but it has no walk-in gate, so travellers cannot pass between the station and the expressway rest area on foot.
