History
Toyoura Station opened on 10 September 1928 as a general station named Benbe Station, with the opening of the Railway Ministry's Osawa Line between Shizukari and Date-Monbetsu stations. On 1 April 1931 the Osawa Line was absorbed into the Muroran Main Line, and on 1 April 1935 the station was renamed Toyoura Station to match a change in the town's name. On 15 May 1980, freight handling ended and it became a contracted station, and it switched to simplified consignment on 1 April 1984; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. On 11 December 1989 it was rebuilt into a distinctive station building with a circular curtain-wall exterior, constructed jointly with the district's community hall. In April 2004 the platform was extended and selective door operation (door cutting) on scheduled trains was discontinued.
Notes
The 1989 reconstructed station building has a curved curtain-wall facade and is co-located with a community hall housing a bakery cafe that sells handmade bread.
