History

Tokoji Station opened on 29 May 1944 as a signal station of the Ministry of Railways, the state railway, on the Shin'etsu Main Line. It was promoted to a full station on 1 July 1953. On 1 October 1970 it gave up parcel handling and became an unstaffed station under simplified contract operation. The 1 April 1987 breakup and privatisation of Japanese National Railways placed it with JR East, and the enlargement of the Niigata suburban zone on 15 March 2008 brought Suica acceptance. The station stands at Kaneko Shinden in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, 91.1 kilometres from the line's terminus at Naoetsu; two opposed ground-level side platforms serve two tracks, linked by a footbridge.

Notes

The station lies about 300 metres from the settlement of the nearby Tokoji district and sits surrounded by paddy fields.
