History

Totoro Station is a Nippō Main Line station opened by the Ministry of Railways on 11 February 1922. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1962, and baggage handling also ended on 20 November 1974, after which the station handled passengers only and became unstaffed. It became a JR Kyushu station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and on 1 June 1996 it was transferred from the Oita Branch to the Kagoshima Branch with the establishment of the Miyazaki General Railway Division. On 1 April 2022 it was transferred again, to the newly established Miyazaki Branch. It is a ground-level station with two opposed platforms serving two tracks, equipped with a footbridge and a waiting shelter, and nearby are facilities such as a JR track-maintenance vehicle depot.

Notes

A summer-only provisional stop, "Totoro Kaisuiyokujō (Totoro Beach) Station," once existed between this station and the neighboring Asahigaoka Station (which had not yet opened at the time). The beach it served is now closed.
