History

Tonami Station opened as "Demachi Station" on 4 May 1897, simultaneously with the opening of the Chūetsu Railway's Kuroda Provisional Stop–Fukuno section. It became a station of the JNR Chūetsu Line with the nationalization of the Chūetsu Railway on 1 September 1920, and belonged to the Jōhana Line from 1 August 1942, when the Takaoka–Jōhana section was renamed the Jōhana Line. It was renamed from Demachi Station to its present name, Tonami Station, on 10 November 1954, and became a JR West station with the 1987 division and privatization of the national railway on 1 April. On 5 February 1998, it began using Toyama Prefecture's first elevated station building spanning the tracks, and it is now a ground-level station with two facing platforms serving two tracks, a major Jōhana Line station where trains can pass one another.
