History

Tomiai Station opened on 12 March 2011 on the Kagoshima Main Line in the Minami-ku ward of Kumamoto City, with JR Kyushu having officially announced the station name on 17 December 2010. Located 205.3 km from the Mojikō starting point, the station is also served by most trains on the Misumi Line, which run through past the nominal Misumi-line terminus at Uto and continue to Kumamoto. The station consists of two opposing side platforms connected by a footbridge serving two tracks at grade, and is unstaffed. In fiscal 2020 it averaged 500 boarding passengers per day, ranking 216th among JR Kyushu's stations.

Notes

JR Kyushu officially announced the station's name on 17 December 2010, less than three months before Tomiai opened on 12 March 2011.
