History

Tokonami Station opened on 1 August 1923 as the terminus when the Ube Railway extended its line from Ube-Shinkawa Station. On 17 August 1924 the Ube Railway extended further to Hon-Achisu (present-day Achisu) Station, making this an intermediate station. It became a station on the state railway's Ube East Line upon the Ube Railway's nationalization on 1 May 1943, and came under the Ube Line when that line was renamed on 1 February 1948. Freight handling ended in 1962 and parcel handling in 1985, and the station passed to JR West at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. On 1 April 2002 it became a station under contracted operation by the Ube City Silver Human Resources Center, but it became unstaffed in September 2012.

Notes

On 4 September 1928, a head-on train collision occurred within the station yard, injuring nine people.
