History

Tateishi Station opened on 15 December 1910 with the opening of the then Ōita Line's Usa–Nakayamaga section. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1961; the station building was rebuilt in July 1965; electrification was completed to Nishiyashiki Station on 28 September 1966, and the Kokura–Kōzaki section was electrified on 1 April 1967. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984, the station became unstaffed on 1 November 1986, and it became a JR Kyushu station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. The IC card "SUGOCA" became usable there on 1 December 2012. It is a station on the Nippō Main Line located at Ōaza Tateishi, Yamaga-machi, Kitsuki City, Ōita Prefecture.

Notes

In the steam locomotive era, Tateishi Pass to the west was known as a difficult section, and the station had a large yard with two island platforms and four tracks for coupling and uncoupling helper locomotives; today two of those tracks have been removed, leaving a ground-level station with two opposed platforms and two tracks.
