History
Tanno Station opened on 5 October 1912 as a general station with the Railway Board's Abashiri Line extension between Notsukeushi Station (present-day Kitami Station) and Abashiri Station. In November of that year, the Ikeda–Abashiri section was renamed the Abashiri Main Line, and on 1 April 1961 the Shin-Asahikawa–Abashiri section was renamed the Sekihoku Main Line, placing the station on that line. The station building was rebuilt in 1933 and 1991. Freight and parcel handling ended in February 1984, the station was placed under simplified consignment in November of that year, and it became fully unstaffed in April 1992. JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. It is now a ground-level station with two opposed platforms serving two tracks, and the station building houses a products center operated by the former Tanno Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Notes
The station building is a composite structure that also houses a products center run by the former Tanno Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry (now the Kitami City Chamber of Commerce and Industry).
