History
Taniyama Station is a Kagoshima City Tram stop on the Taniyama Line, in Higashi-Taniyama, Kagoshima. Kagoshima Electric Railway opened it on 1 December 1912 along National Route 225; on 1 July 1928 operations passed to the Kagoshima City Electric Bureau, now the Transportation Bureau. A 1979 land-readjustment project shifted the stop about 30 meters toward Kamishioya, and a renewed stop opened at the end of March 1996, completed on 2 April 1996. It is the Taniyama-line terminus of tram Line 1; aside from the line's other terminus, Kagoshima-Ekimae, it is the network's only stop with its own station building. It is Japan's southernmost tram stop, and a marker saying so was erected on 1 July 2012 for the network's centenary.
Notes
A plan studied by Kagoshima City from fiscal 2002 to extend the tram tracks 540 meters to meet JR Kyushu's separate Taniyama Station, about 500 meters away in a straight line across the Nagata River, was shelved in 2006 over traffic concerns on the prefectural road, but has since been revisited alongside a proposal to elevate the JR Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line tracks.
