History
Tanaka Station opened on 1 December 1888 as a general-traffic stop on the state-run Shin'etsu Line, in what is now Tōmi, Nagano. It passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East) in the 1987 breakup of Japanese National Railways, then transferred to the third-sector Shinano Railway in 1997, when the Hokuriku Shinkansen opened and JR East's operations were spun off. Freight handling wound down over the following years and ended in 2002. The station is at ground level, with one side platform and one island platform serving three tracks, and a simple Suica card reader was installed in 2026. It remains Tōmi's principal station, 31.3 kilometers from Karuizawa on the Shinano Railway Line.
Notes
On 26 March 2018, Tanaka Station formed a sister-station partnership with the identically named Tanaka Station in Taiwan, alongside a friendship agreement between operator Shinano Railway and the Taiwan Railways Administration.
