History
Tanabe Station opened on 27 November 1980 with the Osaka Municipal Subway Tanimachi Line's extension between Tennoji and Yaominami. With the privatisation of the Osaka Municipal Transportation Bureau on 1 April 2018 it became a station of Osaka Metro (officially Osaka City Rapid Electric Tramway Co., Ltd.), and platform screen doors entered service on 19 December 2025. It is an underground station with an island platform serving two tracks; unusually for a subway line, its ticket gates and concourse are in a surface station building beneath the elevated Hanshin Expressway. It belongs to the Hirano management district and is under the jurisdiction of Hirano Station; as at Komagawa-Nakano Station, it is fully equipped with an up escalator and a lift running directly between the ticket gates and the platform.
Notes
The station is regarded as having the character of a replacement for the Tanabe stop of the Nankai Hirano Line — a stop abolished before the war — and is also thought to have taken over to some extent the role of the abolished Matagaike stop.
