History
Takamori Station opened on 12 February 1928 as a Ministry of Railways station, the terminus of the Takamori Line. Since Japanese National Railways' Takamori Line was converted to the third-sector Minami-Aso Railway on 1 April 1986, the station has housed that company's head office. Use of the second-generation station building began on 6 April 1987. The whole line was suspended after the Kumamoto earthquake of April 2016, but service resumed between Nakamatsu and Takamori on 31 July that year. On 28 April 2023 a third-generation station building was completed to replace the more than 35-year-old second-generation building, which had also suffered earthquake damage, and it entered use the following day, 29 April. A community exchange facility was completed on the site of the former station building on 13 July 2024.
Notes
Originally planned as part of a never-completed cross-Kyushu link to Takachiho, the line stopped at Takamori; today the abandoned bore intended to continue eastwards survives as the town's Takamori Spring Water Tunnel Park.
