History

Takada Station opened on 15 August 1886 as a government railway station in the former castle town of the Takada domain; today it serves as the principal station for the southern part of Jōetsu City. A new station building was completed in December 1952, and with the privatization of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station came under JR East. From fiscal 1999 Jōetsu City carried out its station-front gangi project, covering the pedestrian way in the forecourt with a gangi-style arcade; the forecourt section was completed on 4 April 2002. From 14 March 2015, with the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension from Nagano to Kanazawa, the parallel Shin'etsu Main Line was transferred to the third-sector Echigo Tokimeki Railway, and the automatic faregates that had been in service since 1 December 2005 were taken out of use the previous day.

Notes

Two imperial special trains have begun their journeys at Takada — one carrying the Shōwa Emperor in 1947 to Ueda, and another carrying the Shōwa Emperor and Empress Kōjun to Taguchi for the 19th National Sports Festival in 1964.
