History

Taira opened on 10 May 1913 as Tairamachi Station (多比良町駅) on the Shimabara Railway Line, which begins at Isahaya. Its operations were contracted out on 30 September 1984, the station building was rebuilt in 2013 — converting the toilet to flush operation and adding a ramp and a multipurpose toilet — and the stop was renamed Taira on 1 October 2019. The layout consists of two staggered side platforms linked by two internal level crossings, neither of which has barriers or alarms, and the station remains staffed: with no automatic ticket machine, tickets are sold in person at the counter in the waiting room.

Notes

Taira is the closest station to Nagasaki Prefectural Kunimi High School, a national high-school football powerhouse, and a stone monument shaped like a football stands in the south-platform waiting area to commemorate the team.
