History
Tagawa-Gotōji Station opened as "Gotōji Station" on 5 February 1896, when the Hōshū Railway's line from Ita Station (now Tagawa-Ita Station) to Gotōji was completed. The (first) Kyushu Railway merged with the Hōshū Railway in 1901, and after the nationalization of the Kyushu Railway in 1907, the station became part of the Tagawa Line (later the Hita-Hikosan Line) under the 1909 line-name enactment. The section toward Kikō was split off as the Gotōji Line in 1943, and on 3 November 1982 the station, together with Ita Station, was renamed with "Tagawa" prefixed to reach its current name. JR Kyushu took over at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways in 1987, and the Itoda Line portion was taken over by the Heisei Chikuho Railway in 1989; the station is now a connecting point between the two companies. It was rebuilt as the current single-story steel-frame building on 12 March 1997.
Notes
The "Tagawa" prefix was added because the city could not decide whether Ita or Gotōji should be the central station of Tagawa; after a citizens' survey, the matter was settled with a compromise adding "Tagawa" to both station names, and locally the stations are still often called simply "Ita Station" and "Gotōji Station" without the prefix.
