History

Tabuse Station opened on 25 September 1897 on the San'yō Railway when the line was extended from Hiroshima to Tokuyama. The line was nationalised in 1906 and renamed the San'yō Main Line in 1909. Between December 1934 and October 1944 the station belonged to the spun-off Yanai Line, returning to the San'yō Main Line when that designation was routed back via Yanai. Freight ended in 1963 and parcel handling in 1985. With JNR's privatisation on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. ICOCA went live on 12 March 2022, and the Midori-no-Madoguchi staffed counter closed on 31 March 2022, after which the station was destaffed.

Notes

On 5 March 1968 the House of Councillors' transport committee took up the question of whether a room in the 1959 station building designated a training room was in fact a VIP room for then-prime-minister Eisaku Satō — whose tomb stands nearby — and whether express trains were being stopped at Tabuse out of deference to him; JNR denied both suggestions.
