History

Suō-Takamori Station was established on 1 December 1934 with the opening of the Ministry of Railways' new Sanyo Main Line section between Iwakuni (present-day Nishi-Iwakuni) and Kōsui stations. It came under the Gantoku Line on 11 October 1944 when the Sanyo Main Line's route was returned to the Yanai route, and freight handling ended on 1 October 1974 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. JR West took it over at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways; it became a station operated under contract by JR West Hiroshima Mentec from 1 June 1996, before being placed under contracted (simplified) operation on 1 April 2002. It is managed by Iwakuni Station and is unstaffed in the early morning, at night, and on weekends and holidays.

Notes

The station building has a mansard roof, and the station was formerly a two-platform, four-track layout with freight passing sidings on the inner sides of the up and down main lines facing the island platform.
