Location
History
Sumiyoshi Station is a junction station in Higashinada Ward, Kobe, run jointly by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) and the third-sector Kobe New Transit; tickets sometimes label the JR side "(East) Sumiyoshi" to distinguish it from another Sumiyoshi Station in Kumamoto Prefecture. It opened on 1 June 1874, and the JR side passed to JR West when Japan National Railways was privatized on 1 April 1987. The JR platforms, in an elevated station building, serve the Tōkaidō Main Line (JR Kobe Line); an adjoining viaduct platform is the terminus of Kobe New Transit's automated Rokkō Island Line to Marine Park, opened in the early 1990s. Station number JR-A57 dates from March 2018; Kobe New Transit's platform number is R01.
Notes
During the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, the JR embankment platform on the Osaka side collapsed; separately, Sumiyoshi became a temporary terminus, until through service on the whole JR Kobe Line was restored on 1 April 1995.
