History

Suma Station opened on 1 November 1888 with the opening of the Sanyō Railway's Hyōgo–Akashi section and was nationalised on 1 December 1906, joining the San'yō Main Line under the 1909 line-naming reform. Electric operation arrived in two stages in 1934: from Suita as far as Suma on 20 July, and onward from Suma to Akashi on 20 September. Freight handling ended in 1949 and the station building was rebuilt in 1963. The 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake closed the station briefly between mid- and late January. ICOCA service was added on 1 November 2003. From the 2006 timetable revision the station has been used as a turn-back point for many daytime local services to and from the Osaka direction.

Notes

On 27 December 1975 conductor Ken'ichi Ōyama jumped from the platform to save an inebriated elderly man who had fallen onto the track a Shin-Kaisoku was about to pass on, and was killed alongside him by the oncoming train; a monument commemorates the courage of Ōyama, who was in his second year of service.
