History
Sukaguchi Station opened on 23 January 1914 on the Nagoya Electric Railway's Tsushima Line, becoming a junction on 22 September that year when the same company's Kiyosu Line opened between Sukaguchi and Kiyosu. Operating rights passed to Nagoya Railroad on 1 July 1921, and successive line reorganisations in 1928, 1941 and 1948 — ending with the renaming of the Meigi Line as the Nagoya Main Line on 16 May 1948 — settled the station's present role as the meeting point of the Nagoya Main Line and the Tsushima Line. The track layout itself was left unchanged until July 1987, when the platforms were rearranged from a line-based to a directional layout; an overhead concourse entered service on 1 April 1988 and a six-storey station building followed in July 1988. The station was inundated during the Tōkai flood of 11 September 2000, and Manaca IC ticketing began on 11 February 2011.
Notes
The name Sukaguchi literally means "the entrance to Kiyosu" — the station sits where the outer moat of Kiyosu Castle once ran, marking the historic edge of the castle town.
