Location

History

The site has hosted two successive stops. The first, Kōyasan-dōri, opened on 20 December 1914 on the Kagoshima Electric Tramway, passed to the municipal Electricity Bureau in 1928 and the city Transportation Section in 1933, and was abolished at an unknown date. On 10 May 1956 the Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau opened Kenchō-mae ("Prefectural Office Front") here. When the prefectural office moved away, it was renamed Kenchō-Ato ("Former Prefectural Office") on 6 November 1996. The opening of the Io World Kagoshima Aquarium prompted a further rename, to Suizokukan-guchi ("Aquarium Entrance"), on 3 September 1997, the name it still carries today.

Notes

The original 1914 name "Kōyasan-dōri" came from the Shingon-sect temple Jōjōin in what is now Nagata-chō, Kagoshima, from which the road was said to lead to Kōyasan.
