History
Sōen Station opened on 1 June 1924 on the Hakodate Main Line between Kotoni and Sapporo, taking over the site of a seasonal halt that had served the adjacent Sapporo Racecourse since 1908. The Sasshō-Minami Line — today's Sasshō Line — began branching from the station in November 1934. Freight traffic peaked in the post-war decades but was withdrawn on 2 October 1978, and JR Hokkaido inherited the stop on 1 April 1987. The elevated station building opened on 3 November 1988 as part of the wider Kotoni–Sapporo viaduct project. Electric services on the Sasshō Line began on 1 June 2012, when the line was electrified between Sōen and Hokkaidō-Iryōdaigaku.
Notes
JR Hokkaido has its head office adjoining Sōen Station, and the JR Freight Hokkaido branch is housed in the same building.
