The station opened on 5 April 1956 as an unstaffed passenger-only stop of Japanese National Railways. It was absorbed into the JR East network at the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. Operations of the line and the station were suspended by the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011, and services were resumed on 17 March 2013. The station has a single side platform serving one bi-directional track and remains unattended, lying 23.7 kilometers from the line's terminus at Kogota Station.
