History

Shitayama Station opened as a station of the Kurobe Railway on 5 November 1922. On 1 January 1943 all railway companies within Toyama Prefecture were consolidated into Toyama Chihō Railway (Chitetsu), centered on Toyama Electric Railway, and the station was assigned to that company's Kurobe Line; on 11 November of the same year, the former Kurobe Railway line's voltage was raised from 600 V to 1,500 V and through service between Dentetsu-Toyama and Unazuki stations began. Signal automation was implemented between Dentetsu-Sakurai and Unazuki stations on 30 November 1966, and with the line-name change of 1 April 1969 the section between Dentetsu-Toyama and Unazuki became the Main Line, with freight operations ending the same day. The station became unstaffed on 25 July 1989. On 26 February 2015 Shin-Kurobe Station opened between this station and Nagaya Station, only 300 meters away, making it the shortest inter-station distance on the Toyama Chihō Railway.

Notes

The name Shitayama is said to derive from 下山, written with the character for "below" because the place lies below nearby Fuse-yama; the homophonous character 舌 ("tongue") came to be used in its place by mistake and stuck.
