History

Shiroishi Station opened on 10 June 1976 when the Sapporo Municipal Subway's Tōzai Line began service between Kotoni Station and Shiroishi Station; during construction the station was provisionally named Kanjō-dōri. It served as the line's terminus until 21 March 1982, when the extension relocated the terminus to Shin-Sapporo Station and Shiroishi became a through station. Numbered T13, the station has a single island platform serving two tracks, with platform screen doors that began operating on 11 November 2008. It lies at the junction of Kanjō-dōri and Nangō-dōri in Shiroishi-ku, in a busy, mid-sized commercial district, and keeps its ordinary kanji name because it sits about 1.6 km from JR Hokkaido's Shiroishi Station, too far to serve as a transfer point.

Notes

A 2011 city hazard map designated Shiroishi Station as at risk of flooding from a possible breach of the Motsukisamu River, and the city recommends that people evacuate before floodwaters arrive rather than enter the station once they do.
