History
A station here first opened as a flag stop on 13 November 1882 on the government-run Horonai Railway, but was suspended, changed hands, and abolished before reopening as a full general station on 21 April 1903. The line was nationalized in 1906, passing to the Railway Board, then to Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) at the 1987 JNR breakup. The station carries number H03 on the Hakodate Main Line; Chitose Line trains have run through to Sapporo over that line since 1973. The current station building, built over the tracks with a free north-south passage, opened on 30 January 2011 under a Sapporo city station-area redevelopment project. Four tracks flank two direction-separated island platforms; two further tracks lack platforms.
Notes
On 25 October 1970 the station entered a sister-station tie with the identically named Shiroishi Station on the Tōhoku Main Line in Miyagi Prefecture, one of three stations named Shiroishi on the JR network (the third is in Kumamoto Prefecture).
