History
Shiraoi Station opened on 1 August 1892 as a general station of the Hokkaido Colliery Railway, and an engine shed was established at the same time (the Shiraoi engine shed was abolished on 25 January 1906). It passed to the Government Railway when the Hokkaido Colliery Railway's lines were nationalized on 1 October 1906. Freight handling ended in 1982 and parcel handling in 1984; the station became a contracted station on 1 April of that year; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways, and the station building was rebuilt on 1 September of that year. On 14 March 2020 the station's subsidiary name became "Upopoy — Symbolic Space for Ethnic Harmony, front"; to coincide with the opening of Upopoy, the station building was renovated, a new footbridge for transfers was built, the up platform was raised, and a free passage was opened, and the limited express "Hokuto" began stopping there for 10 downbound and 9 upbound trains.
Notes
Since the opening of the Upopoy National Ainu Museum in 2020, in-train announcements on stopping limited expresses are now made in Ainu — telling passengers in Ainu to alight at Shiraoi for Upopoy.
