History
Shiranuka Station opened on 20 July 1901 as a Hokkaidō Kansetsu Tetsudō stop on what is now the Nemuro Main Line, and was incorporated into the government railways on 1 April 1905. It served as the junction with the 33.1-kilometre Shiranuka Line, which ran north from here between 7 October 1964 and its closure on 23 October 1983, when the branch was replaced by a bus service. The station passed to JR Hokkaido on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways. Today it has one side and one island platform connected by a footbridge, a Midori no Madoguchi office, and acts as the principal stop for Shiranuka town.
Notes
From 1964 to 1983 Shiranuka was a junction station: the 33.1-kilometre Shiranuka Line ran north from here before being replaced by a town-run bus service.
