History

Shinshiro Station was established on 25 April 1898 as a station of the private Toyokawa Railway. Following the 1897 opening between Toyohashi and Mikawa-Ichinomiya, it was the terminus when the line was extended to this station in April of the following year. It became a through station when the line reached full completion to Ōmi on 23 September 1900. It became a station of the Japanese National Railways Iida Line when the Toyokawa Railway was nationalized on 1 August 1943; freight handling ended on 1 April 1972 and parcel handling on 14 March 1985, making it a passenger-only station. It passed to JR Central at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. An elevator came into use on 7 November 2021, and TOICA became usable on 15 March 2025. Located in the central urban area of Shinshiro City, it is a major station in the southern Iida Line at which all trains, including the limited express "Inaji," stop.

Notes

A movable platform installed in April 1967 was designed to convert into a ramp connecting the platform surface with the track level after a train departed, the first such facility on the Japanese National Railways.
