History

Shin-Ōmiya Station is a station at Shibatsuji-chō 4-chōme, Nara, Nara Prefecture, opened on 9 December 1969 in conjunction with undergrounding work on the Kintetsu Nara Line between Aburasaka and Kinki Nippon Nara (now Kintetsu-Nara) stations. The street-running track that then existed between Aburasaka and Kinki Nippon Nara had been an obstacle to speeding up the Nara Line, and undergrounding was carried out as a Nara city urban-planning project. As a result Aburasaka Station was abolished, and this new station was established on the surface section about 700 metres to the west. Completion of platform-extension work on 15 March 2000 added it to the stops served by rapid express trains, and PiTaPa became usable from 1 April 2007. It is a ground-level station with two opposed platforms serving two tracks; the platforms have an effective length of ten cars, and the ticket gates for the up and down tracks are separate.

Notes

The area around the station along National Route 369 has government offices and a business district as well as many izakaya and restaurants, making it one of the few areas in Nara Prefecture that stays lively late into the night.
