History
Shinomiya Station, a stop on the Keihan Electric Railway Keishin Line in Shinomiya-Dōnoushi-chō, Yamashina Ward, Kyoto, opened on 15 August 1912 with the opening of the Keishin Electric Tramway between Sanjō-Ōhashi and Fudanotsuji. The place name "Shinomiya" is said to derive from a mountain villa north of Tokurin-an that belonged to Imperial Prince Saneyasu, the fourth son of Emperor Ninmyō. A merger on 1 February 1925 made it a station of the Keihan Electric Railway Keishin Line; a further merger made it a stop of Keihanshin Express Railway on 1 October 1943, and a demerger on 1 December 1949 returned it to Keihan Electric Railway. On 7 August 1949 a fire broke out at the adjoining Shinomiya rail yard, destroying the yard entirely along with 22 cars; a new yard was completed the following year, 1950. On 10 September of that year an additional up-direction track was built, and the station designated for overtaking express trains was changed from Yamashina Station to this one. A new station building came into use in 1997, and the IC card "PiTaPa" became usable on 1 April 2007. Its station number is OT32.
Notes
Although the station has platforms serving three or more tracks, no platform numbers are shown for passengers, and the automated announcements do not give platform numbers either. Internally, however, track numbers do exist for management purposes, counted starting from track 1 on the platform nearest the rail yard.
