History

Shinano-Taira Station opened as a station of the Iiyama Railway under the name Shinshū-Taira Station on 6 July 1923, at what is now Tokiwa, Iiyama, Nagano Prefecture. Nationalization on 1 June 1944 made it a station of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (later Japanese National Railways) Iiyama Line, and it was simultaneously renamed Shinano-Taira Station. Freight and parcel handling ended on 7 December 1970, and the passing-loop facilities were also removed, leaving a single through track; the station became unstaffed on 1 March of the following year, 1971. It became a station of East Japan Railway Company (JR East) at the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987.

Notes

The station building is a distinctive structure converted from a covered brake van (car No. Wafu 29737); together with Hirahara Station, it is one of the stations in Nagano Prefecture with a waiting room converted from a freight car.
