History

Shinano-Kizaki Station opened, and began handling passengers and freight, on 25 September 1929, when the then-National Railways Ōito South Line completed the section between Shinano-Ōmachi and Yanaba stations. When the line was joined end to end with the opening of the Nakatsuchi–Kotaki section on 15 August 1957, the line's name was changed to the Ōito Line. The Shinano-Ōmachi–Shinano-Yotsuya (now Hakuba) section was electrified on 17 July 1959; freight handling was discontinued in 1971, and parcel handling was discontinued and the station became unstaffed in 1983. It passed to JR East with the 1987 division and privatization of the national railway on 1 April, and a new station building was completed on 28 December 1999. The 2014 Nagano Prefecture Kamishiro Fault earthquake of 22 November 2014 temporarily suspended service between Shinano-Ōmachi and Itoigawa, and the entire Ōito Line was restored by 7 December of the same year. The station was incorporated into the Greater Tokyo Area network on 14 March 2026.

Notes

The station was incorporated into the Greater Tokyo Area network when it was expanded in March 2026, but within that expanded area only Shinano-Ōmachi and Hakuba stations accept IC cards such as Suica, and Suica cannot be used for boarding or alighting at this station.
