History
Shin-Iwakuni Station opened on 10 March 1975 as a Japanese National Railways station in Mishō, Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, simultaneously with the extension of the Sanyō Shinkansen between Okayama and Hakata stations. Among the stations opened simultaneously between Okayama and Hakata, it was the only one that was a Shinkansen-only station. At the time, the Japanese National Railways Gannichi Line's Mishō Station (present-day Seiryū Shin-Iwakuni Station) stood nearby, but at JNR's discretion the two were not treated as the same station. It became a station of West Japan Railway Company (JR West) at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. Stops by scheduled "Hikari" trains were temporarily discontinued in the 29 November 1997 timetable revision, but some "Hikari" stops were restored in the 16 March 2013 timetable revision. For fare-distance purposes the station is treated as the same station as Iwakuni Station.
Notes
Among the stations that opened simultaneously in 1975 between Okayama and Hakata on the Sanyō Shinkansen, it was the only station that was Shinkansen-only. Just toward Tokuyama from the station stands the Nishikigawa Railway's Seiryū Shin-Iwakuni Station (formerly JNR's Mishō Station), but the two have been treated as separate stations since opening and remain today two distinct stations connected by a passageway.
