History
Shimotsu Station opened on 20 August 1924 between Hatsushima and Kamogō stations on the Ministry of Railways' Kisei West Line. It was incorporated into the Kisei Main Line in the 15 July 1959 line-name revision, and freight handling ended in February 1984 and parcel handling in March 1985. It became a JR West station at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways, and the present station building was completed on 3 February 1990. It became unstaffed all day from 17 March 2018, and the ICOCA IC card became usable on 14 March 2020. The station building stands on the platform for trains toward Wakayama, connected to the opposite platform by an overpass.
Notes
Adjacent to the station once stood rail-shipping facilities for the Maruzen Oil Shimotsu Refinery, with a middle track for tank cars laid between the up and down main lines. Even after the facilities were removed, a space for one track remains between the up and down lines.
