History

Shimonomiya Station opened on 16 April 1930 on the Suigun Line, in the town of Daigo, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture. Its single side platform, 62.0 rail kilometres from the line's starting point at Mito, serves traffic in both directions, and the station is unstaffed. With the breakup of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station passed to East Japan Railway Company, which has operated it ever since. Ibaraki Kōtsū buses connect the station with nearby destinations such as Hitachi-Daigo Station.
