Location

History

Shimonagaya Station opened on 14 March 1985 on the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line (Line 1), between Maioka and Kaminagaya. The stop had not been part of the original plan, which envisaged Maioka as the only intermediate station between Kaminagaya and Totsuka, but development of the Shimonagaya district from 1971 onward — together with the Higiriyama Keikyū New Town, whose construction sharply increased the local population — prompted a fresh review of demand that led to the decision to build the station. Elevator and accessible-toilet upgrades were completed on 29 March 2002, platform-edge doors entered service on 4 August 2007, and Wi-Fi began on 1 May 2012. The station name follows the historic 'Shimonagaya-chō' district.

Notes

The Blue Line tunnel here has a hybrid cross-section — box-shaped through the platform area but arched over the running tracks — which produces the unusual sight of pillars supporting the arch standing on the platforms themselves.
