History
Shimojima Station opened on 27 December 1913 when the Ina Electric Tramway, renamed Ina Electric Railway in 1919, extended its line between Miyata and present-day Ina. Around 1932 it was relocated about 0.4 kilometers to its current site, reportedly to meet a road crossing after accidents increased on the adjacent prefectural route. The line was nationalized into the Iida Line in 1943 and passed to JR Central in the 1987 breakup of Japanese National Railways. The station became unattended in 1968 and today consists of a single ground-level side platform on one bidirectional track, with a waiting shelter but no station building, 174.5 kilometers from Toyohashi near National Route 153 and the Tenryu River.
Notes
Nagano Prefecture has a second, unrelated Shimojima Station in the city of Matsumoto, sharing this station's name despite being in a different municipality.
